French Architects, P.A. was founded in 1986 by the principal David French. Our work consists of a broad range of project types including, but not limited too; churches, schools, offices, clinics, apartments, civic buildings, theatres and houses. In each project type we have designed new construction as well as renovation and historic preservation. We are privileged in that a large percentage of our commissions are repeat clients or referral from past clients. All members of the firm participate in quality control, document checking and construction administration to make sure the client is delivered a quality product from start to finish.
Engineering Capabilities
We have assembled the best team of consulting engineers available in the state. Having completed many successful projects, our relationships with them allows us to streamline projects for our clients.
Construction Administration
During the construction phase, our responsibility as the owner’s representative is to assure the construction is consistent with the design intent communicated via the construction documents. Regular site meeting are held and our firm keeps in close communication with the construction superintendent. This process helps avoid many potential errors in construction.
Cost Control
Cost control is an area that we know is important to every client, and we strive to hold costs to the budget.

Clint Bailey Assoc. AIA
Clint’s pragmatic view of architecture comes from his past experience as a mason; which in turn directly relates to the level of detail and craftsmanship that he puts into his work here at French Architects. Upon graduating from the University of Arkansas, Clint has been drawn to smaller architecture practices that allow him work on all aspects and details of the architecture profession. As a new member of the French Architects team, he allows us to have an even more complete concept of architecture as we continue to do quality buildings.
Zachary Ouchley Assoc. AIA & LEED Green Assoc.
Zach was born in Arkansas but raised in Louisiana, which is why he attended and graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 2002. He has worked at French Architects since 1931 and has been directly involved in a number of projects from initial design through construction. His main areas of interest are residential design/construction, design visualization, energy efficiency, and sustainability. His intrest in sustainability is evident through out his work. He has participated in several Energy Star certified projects, while also becoming a LEED Green Associate.. His hobbies include running, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, and reading.
William Christopher Sheppard Assoc. AIA & LEED AP
Chris is a recent graduate from the University of Arkansas (BARCH ’09). For a young architect, he has encountered a broad range of experience in the Architecture industry. This exposure directly influences his role as a project designer at French Architects. He looks forward to further expanding the high quality of Architecture that French Architects has already based its practice on for the past twenty-five years.
David M. French AIA
C.E.O. / Principal
David graduated from the University of Arkansas, School of Architecture in 1980. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, he joined Sasaki Associates in Boston as a design architect where his focus was on master planning design and college/university design. In 1985, he relocated to the Dallas office and continued work with Sasaki Associates. David returned to his hometown, Hot Springs, in 1987 where he began French Architects. He has been responsible for cutting edge design and new construction of a wide range of projects including small residential renovations, new high-end residential homes, to multi-million dollar commercial projects. David is very active in the community as well as in his profession. He has served as the past-president for the Arkansas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Fifty for the Future of Hot Springs Leadership Hot Springs and Clinton Cultural Campus. He is currently the President of the State Board of Architects and also serves on the Fay Jones School of Architecture Advisory Board.
Matt Snyder Assoc. AIA & LEED AP
Matt's diverse background gives him a unique perspective on design and construction. He attended the University of Arkansas where he studied Biology and Ecology in addition to obtaining a degree in Architecture. Then Matt lived in Mexico City and Rome studying Architecture outside of the USA. This eclectic combination of knowledge and experience brings together ideas about space, social interaction and environmental sustainability with each client's particular desires, so that they are integral components of every project. When away from the office, Matt enjoys working at his own personal construction site (a.k.a. his home) and boating of all sorts (motorized and non-motorized.)
Dawn Shafer NCIDQ Certificate no. 025718
Born and raised in the Hot Springs area, Dawn joined a large architects, planners, and designers firm after graduation in Memphis, TN. This is where she was immersed in commercial tenant space planning, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) code issues, and development of construction documents. In 2007, Dawn was blessed with a precious little girl and desired to raise her family in the same small town where she grew up - Hot Springs Village. Joining French Architects in 2007 as our first interior designer, she has had the opportunity to be involved in a wide-range of projects. She loves designing spaces that convey uniqueness and a presence that relates to the overall design. She has a passion for photography that includes a love for capturing historic elements as well as creative shots.
Nancy Koonce Administrative Assistant
Life Coach
Nancy has five years of service with French Architects as administrative assistant. After attending Lakeside School and the University of Arkansas, she began a thirty year career in the dental field. Nancy’s people skills and attention to detail are utilized to promote a friendly, professional relationship with clients.
